State Road 550 and Kōkeʻe Road are both paved and driven by ordinary vehicles every day. The surface is not the issue. The view from the car during a tight turn is mostly canyon below you. That is what triggers anxiety.

But here is the thing: it is not dangerous. Full-size tour coaches with 40 people inside run this road multiple times a day. The tour drivers have logged thousands of passes. The accident rate is low. The road has been engineered and maintained for this traffic. You are not taking a risk that the professionals avoid.

If narrow, winding mountain roads make you genuinely anxious, even at reasonable speeds, then let the professional drive.
