Waimea Canyon tours: the 14-mile drive and the 80% of Kauaʻi you need a flight to see
The baseline: drive it yourself
State Road 550 (Waimea Canyon Drive) climbs from Waimea town to Kōkeʻe State Park. The road is paved, driven every day by rental cars and tour coaches. There’s no permit, no timed entry, no reservation. Non-residents pay $5 per person entry fee and $10 for parking — one ticket covers both Waimea Canyon State Park and Kōkeʻe above it. A couple in a rental car pays $20 total. A family of four pays $30. Payment is at self-serve kiosks in the paved lots, credit card only. The drive up takes most of a day either way. Weekday closure: Waimea Canyon Drive between Maʻule Road and Kōkeʻe Road is closed weekdays 8am–11:30pm for resurfacing until 17 August 2026. Weekends and holidays stay open. The detour for Kōkeʻe is Kōkeʻe Road out of Kekaha.

The ground tours: five ways up the canyon
The five ground tours all drive Waimea Canyon Drive (or work around the current weekday closure). They range from 7 to 9 hours and all include live English guides. Three include hotel pickup, which matters more than usual while the road is shut on weekdays. The most-booked is the flagship at $231 (9 hours); the cheapest is the small-group Kōkeʻe tour at $187 (9 hours). The air tours: the plane vs. the helicopter
Four air tours reach backcountry that the road never gets to. Two are fixed-wing aeroplanes and two are helicopters. The distinction matters: a plane is roughly half the price ($155–$159) and flies the same coastline, but cannot hover and cannot land. Which tour is right for you
Ground tours: most people book the $231 flagship or the $187 budget small-group. On a fixed budget, the $187 Kōkeʻe tour is excellent value and the highest-rated. If you hate crowds, the private tour gives you own pace, but at $1085 per group it needs 5–6 people to beat the per-person cost of the shared tours.

Is the canyon really closed right now?
