How much does a Waimea Canyon tour cost?

The self-drive baseline: $5 per person entry plus $10 parking covers two people for $20, a family of four for $30, and both Waimea Canyon and Kōkeʻe State Parks. The tours on this site run $155–$369 per person, plus the private option at $1085 per group.

The self-drive cost, worked out

The state charges $5 per non-resident entry to Waimea Canyon State Park. Children under three enter free. The parking kiosk costs $10 for a non-commercial vehicle. One ticket covers both Waimea Canyon and Kōkeʻe State Parks. Hawaii residents with a valid ID pay nothing for entry or parking.

A couple renting a car pays $20 total. A family of four pays $30. A solo traveller pays $15. That is the entry-level cost if you drive yourself. Gas, a rental car, and a meal will add to that, but there is no tour markup, no booking fee, no gratuity expected, and no reservation required. You show up, pay at the kiosk, and drive.

The kiosks are credit-card only — they do not accept cash. Plan accordingly.

What the tours add

A guide, transportation, and a structured itinerary. The ground tours run $187–$231 per person for 7 to 9 hours, and they handle the drive, the stops, the narration, and often hotel pickup. The air tours (fixed-wing planes and helicopters) run $155–$369 and show you the 80 per cent of Kauaʻi that has no road access. The self-drive page explains when a tour makes sense.

Insider tip

The parking ticket is valid all day. If you visit multiple lookouts or take a long lunch, you do not pay twice.

The private tour: per-group pricing

The private option costs $1085 per group, not per person. If you are two people, that is $542 each. Four people: $271 each. Six people: $181 each. The break-even against booking four individual seats on a shared tour ($231 × 4 = $924) happens around four people, making the private option cheaper at that size if your group values flexibility and pace. For solo or pair travel, the shared tours are less expensive.

How to save

Book online ahead of time; walk-up prices are higher. Self-drive if the road is open and you have a free weekday; the canyon road is currently closed weekdays from 22 June to an expected 17 August 2026. Choose a small-group over a private tour. On air tours, the fixed-wing planes at $155–$159 beat the helicopters at $336–$369 if you do not need to land. See the plane-vs-helicopter comparison for what each offers.

Frequently asked questions

How much is it to visit Waimea Canyon if I drive myself?

$5 per person entry and $10 parking. A couple pays $20, a family of four pays $30, and one ticket covers both Waimea Canyon and Kōkeʻe State Parks.

Are entry fees included in tour prices?

On ground tours, usually yes. Air tours do not charge a park entry; they fly above the canyon. Always check the specific tour before booking.

How much should I tip my guide?

A gratuity is customary but never required. Tip what you felt the experience was worth. The tours are booked through GetYourGuide, and tipping happens after the tour.

Can I pay for Waimea Canyon entry with cash?

No. The kiosks in each lot are credit-card only. Bring a card if you drive yourself.

Is the private tour really cheaper for a large group?

Yes, if you have four or more people. At four people, $1085 ÷ 4 = $271 per person, which beats booking four seats at $231 on a shared tour. For two or three people, the shared tours are less expensive.
